[we live in a society- i mean, a library. lucretia is, naturally, here to check out what the variety is like; there's a history book or two in the stack she's got, one on the planes, one on standard astronomy, and one on various religions. she's just out here collecting for the moment. but she'll turn to whichever of them she comes across first (or to both, if they're together already), glancing over any volumes they happen to have.]
I doubt they've left anything too helpful lying around, but-- well, it's worth looking into anyway. Besides, the collection seems like it might be worthwhile on its own.
[These two nerds are probably sitting by a bunch of stacks of books going through them. His own stack of books covers a broad range of subject matters, though little to do with any magic.]
Very little in the way of what I would usually look for, but the access is worth a lot.
[yeah, and she's sitting in the most "fuck this chair" way possible, which is to say she's either sitting on the backrest part or she's upside down.]
Wouldn't it be nice if they just left a "how to get out of the horrible prison school you've been forcibly enrolled in" just lying around? [she says dryly, a third of a way through a book detailing various court records. she looks vaguely annoyed.]
It could at least provide avenues of inquiry, or discount some that might not work out.
[with a gesture to a book on religions:]
Malik was fairly convinced this is some kind of divine influence, with the power it seems to have over this place. I'm- less inclined to think so, but it's one of several starting points.
We've had our share of dealings with evil Gods. It's possibly, but thus far lacking that aura of creepiness. The aesthetic is something childish, between the school and the expulsion, which was apparently modeled after a type of game.
Yeah. Most gods or big powerful beings we've dealt with are more... doom and gloom all the way through. This is just cheery and secretly sinister. [stepfordy, is the term she's looking for, but she doesn't know]
It was largely the deaths, I believe. The degree of control over both this place and ourselves could be explained by something less divine in nature, but he seems to suspect something that wants sacrifice.
[one of these books is definitely on like. 'blood magic and you' or something, also.]
I'd say it's a relief to know it doesn't seem like one, but it must have been-- harrowing, to actually deal with them more directly.
Fortunately not too directly. But honestly - a little theory I had was related to the comment about tradition. Perhaps this school used to be something else, long ago, but now it has transitioned into something more benign? A wish is quite a thing to offer just for attending classes; maybe once it was more sinister and we've tapped into it somehow?
I think that's a fairly reasonable theory, as well.
[she's noting it down, actually, recording that among other things to study.]
There's also the chance that rather than having legitimately transitioned into one, the school is just a front... though in that case, if others like the dorm heads have been attending without experiencing anything like this, it's a longer-running one rather than something created too recently.
Maybe a more cutthroat school. I was thinking, sort of, uhm, building your school in what you think is an abandoned plane, only to find it is the site of something more sinister.
I think it may be a real school for now, but there's something wrong at the heart of it.
As well as the fact that no one we've come in contact with seems to have any influence over these-- traditions. It fits the idea that something else is behind them.
[she sets her pen down for the moment, adjusting her right sleeve and tugging it further down into place.]
It was mentioned that we were chosen to participate, too, which is... one of the most concerning things. There must be a reason why it was us, specifically.
Something else chose us, maybe. And I wonder - [Hmm.] Since talking to Kaoruko, I've had a nasty little thought in my mind.
Most people who come here come here on purpose, because they want the chance to attend this school and graduate. We were brought here against our will, knowing nothing about it, and as such we were suspicious and angry and have spent our first week here gearing up for a fight.
Kaoruko kept stressing the need to play along more - I wonder if our suspicious attitudes are in some way empowering whatever malicious thing is at the bottom of this?
It's one that I created, actually-- a modification working off of Shield of Faith as a base. A barrier.
It'll be less powerful than it normally is, but it should still be able to take a fatal blow; what I need to know is what it can withstand up to that point, in the thirty seconds it's active.
Sounds very impressive. Beauregard is probably more useful than I am, but there may be a way I can help test it. Though if I am to try, it may need to be tomorrow.
Once every twenty-four hours. It should be possible to use further transactions to allow it to be cast more often or to strengthen it, though, if it seems like that might be necessary, but just having Beauregard try to break it should be fine for today. Most of the reason that I asked both of you was for a second perspective.
Why don't we try somewhere in the gym to start with? I do think it might be better not to just put it right out there yet.
[it's not going to be super helpful protection if everyone can just observe it from a distance. at least in the gym they'll know if somebody pops in.]
[she wants to know what's up with that? definitely going to have to run more tests tomorrow.
she'll be at the gym, though, waiting for them! her right hand's on her staff, and where the sleeve's fallen back a bit it looks like her forearm is bandaged. whichever of them gets close enough first, she'll reach out and rest a hand on their arm.]
It's good to see both of you. Now, did you have anything you wanted to sort of go over first, or should we go ahead and get this moving?
[He comes and meets her, and. Given the week, if he comes in with Beau he probably has his hand on her shoulder as he walks. But upon seeing Lucretia, just giving her a friendly touch on the arm as well.]
. . . Did you have to buy the components, or does your staff suffice as a focus?
The staff suffices on its own-- I created it primarily to channel abjuration magic.
[likely with this spell in mind, in case it was needed later.
she glances to beau, next.]
Theoretically, it's going to last thirty seconds, but it might break before that-- the amount of force it can withstand is part of what I need to know. So I'd like you to more or less just... let loose on this thing right up until that happens, and see if we get a full thirty out of it or not.
this is kind of fun for beau, so she really puts a lot of effort into it, putting as much power as she can behind her fists. wham, wham, wham. she will, however, falter if it looks like the barrier is about to break at any point.]

[she sets her stack down with a sigh, picking one off the top.]
But you're not wrong about the access. Pulling from other worlds might have been inconvenient for us, but at least it makes for a wide variety.

I think both have merit. [beau says, rubbing at her face.] I think it's a possibility that we unlocked something old, like some set of old-new rules.
And the fact that none of us signed up to be here makes me wonder, still.
