I think he isn't the type to want to make friends in this situation. If you prefer to have a professional distance, having people you oversee get too familiar is, frankly, the nightmare scenario.

I've asked him some stuff...I wanted to find out what he was looking to study in university and I've asked him some other stuff. Sometimes he answers, sometimes he doesn't. I'm pretty sure he's humoring me at this point.
